Visa approves RIM for mobile payment solution

WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - January 16, 2013) - Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM)(TSX: RIM) today announced that its Secure Element Manager (SEM) solution for NFC (Near Field Communication) mobile payments has been approved by Visa. RIMs SEM is the backend solution for carriers that can securely manage credentials on SIM (subscriber identity module) cards installed in all types of NFC-capable mobile devices.

Research In Motion describes its Secure Element Manager technology, or SEM, as a way for networks to manage all types of mobile devices equipped for close-range wireless payments, also known as near field communications or NFC.
The EnStream joint venture owned by BCEs Bell (TSX:BCE), Rogers (TSX:RCI.B) and Telus (TSX:T) has already begun to deploy mobile payments in Canada using the RIM SEM technology.
"The approval from Visa of RIMs SEM solution is an important step in that it will enable carriers to support Visa issuing banks and financial institutions," said Frank Maduri, a RIM senior director responsible for mobile payment services.

Mobile Testing encompasses mobile application testing, mobile device testing, mobile phone testing, mobile system testing.

Mobile Application Testing is testing the application on a mobile device.  What kind of testing does this entail? Is it strictly GUI testing which is making sure the application is functional according to the requirements? Or is testing the application’s functional performance on a mobile phone the expectation?  The clarification of what testing is to be done is between you and your stakeholders must be defined and most often is not.  However, software testers do not have the experience to do system testing and require some guidance on expectations.  Requirements help but requirements for mobile applications usually only consider the functionality of a software application without considering how the application works within an entire system.

Mobile Device Testing is testing hardware and operating system.  Does the Operating System install?  Does the device power on? Do the LED lights work as expected?  Does the battery charge when the AC Adapter is plugged into the phone?  Distinguish the type of mobile device: completely independent mobile device which communicates via cell network communication or even radio communication like tablets, mobile handset type devices, mobile phones, PDMs, monitors (like what you see in hospital rooms) etc.

Mobile Phone Testing is doing any testing on a mobile phone. This kind of testing could mean performance testing, network communication testing, GUI functional testing, downloading/installation of application tests. When people discuss Mobile Testing, often times the testing is in reference to a mobile application which works on a mobile phone and disregards other types of mobile devices.

Mobile System Testing – combination of all testing types described above. Testing a mobile application on a mobile device could entail tests which include the application retaining clock information after the battery of the device was drained and recharging. Here, the test case is inclusive of operating system functionality, the clock, the charger, and then if the software receives the information based on what the operating system receives. If the application needs to communicate data to another entity like another phone, a server somewhere, does the network communication work as expected?

Mobile Application Testing is generally regarded as the term for all Mobile Testing techniques. As such, many software testers are approaching Mobile Testing as how the application works on a phone. The idea of the application on a mobile device as system testing is often overlooked. Tests which include how an application behaves as a device charges for example, is not being done before the release of the application.

Software testers who are assigned to test applications on mobile devices need to go beyond thinking “if I tap on the icon, does the application start” or “if I press the cancel button, does the operation/function get cancelled.” Functional application testing is important but, the application is a part of an entire system and not just a singular entity. The application is completely dependent on the entire system, to function within the system, is a part of the system. Temperature, memory, CPU Speed, Database searches are all affected when a device is charging and these tests are continually not considered.

Which Do You Prefer Removable VS Non Removable Mobile Battery

Phone geeks must have been wondering why suddenly Phone manufacturers switched to non-removable battery. Some of us don’t really like the facts that most smartphones company now produces non removable battery devices. I’ve been privileged to interact with different individual regarding their choice of smartphone and majority of them prefers removable while some don’t really care.


You’ll notice that the use of Universal charger is gradually going out of the market and being replaced with Power banks because most devices now have inbuilt battery.

Personally, I don’t like devices with inbuilt battery because when it eventually lags you have to wait for the battery to run down before you can restart it (what if your device is like that of Ouikitel K10000 whose battery can last you for 10days without charging, meaning you have to wait for 15days before you restart it?). What if you device fall into water or hot pepper soup, how will you dry it if you can’t remove the battery? That may be the end.

Manufacturers don’t want you to tamper with the battery and integral part of the phone that is why they keep producing non removable battery devices.

ZTE to Launch Mozilla Mobile OS based Smartphones

Chinese telecommunications equipment maker ZTE Corp. plans to launch smartphones using a mobile operating system it developed with Mozilla, the U.S. software company behind the Firefox web browser, in the first quarter of next year.

The move is the latest indication that handset makers are looking beyond Google Inc.s dominant Android mobile operating system as they try to diversify the software platforms for their smartphones and other mobile devices. While Apple Inc.s iPhone uses its own iOS software, most other smartphones currently sold around the world are powered by Android.

ZTE Executive Vice President He Shiyou said at a press briefing Wednesday that the company, one of Chinas largest mobile handset makers, will also launch smartphones using Microsoft Corp.s Windows Phone 8 operating system at the end of this year or early next year.

Along with Microsofts Windows Phone 8, the new mobile operating system from Mozilla and ZTE will fuel discussions world-wide about possible alternatives to Android. Potential alternatives are drawing more attention as the technology industry is closely watching Apples patent war against rival smartphone makers using the Google software.

ZTEs smartphone launch plans also come after Taiwanese personal computer maker Acer Inc. last week postponed its release in China of a new smartphone using Alibaba Group Holdings Aliyun mobile operating system, after Google objected to the phones launch.

Google said Alibabas Aliyun "was derived from Android" yet it isnt compatible with Android. Acer, a handset maker that is part of the Android ecosystem, isnt allowed to ship non-compatible Android devices, Google said. Alibaba, Chinas biggest e-commerce company, strongly disagreed with Googles view, saying that some of Aliyuns key software components were developed by Alibaba and are different from those used in Android.

According to market research firm IDC, 68.1% of smartphones shipped worldwide in the second quarter used Android, while 16.9% were Apple products running on iOS. Microsofts Windows Phone mobile operating system accounted for only 3.5%.

ZTE, whose main business is providing telecommunications infrastructure and equipment, entered the mobile handset business in 2002. ZTE accounted for 5.2% of all the smartphones shipped worldwide in the second quarter, up sharply from 1.8% a year earlier, according to IDC, ranking the company fifth after Samsung Electronics Co., Apple, Nokia Corp. and HTC Corp. of Taiwan.
