Only a few years later, this technology was realized in the form of the Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) with Windows Mobile software connecting to the Internet through the new 2G data network
the predecessor to todays 3G network and beyond.
Not long after PDAs became Internet ready, a company named Research in Motion (RIM) developed a new device, and more importantly a new, groundbreaking technology, that would change the world of mobile Internet access forever. Today Im going to answer the question, what is Blackberry technology, and Im also going to describe why it still remains the most effective methods of doing business (or having fun) over the Internet while youre mobile.
What Is Blackberry Technology?
In all honesty, theres nothing overwhelmingly terrific about the Blackberry device itself. PDA devices had cellphone and Internet capabilities integrated into them long before the Blackberry became a household name. The first versions of the Blackberry werent leaps and bounds ahead of the leading hand-held mobile devices of the day.
With that said, the Blackberry technology itself was a major advancement in mobile technologies, and its the Blackberry service that ultimately led to the popularity of this device. Its the ability of this service to keep you instantly connected to your home or office network that made it into the leading mobile devices today with its own cult following of avid enthusiasts and users.
So what exactly is Blackberry Technology, and what makes it so special?
Its called Push Technology.
Push Technology Compared to the PDA Pull Method
There are different configurations of the Blackberry service, but the most common enterprise setup is with the Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES). The entire purpose of this server is to keep all Blackberry users instantly updated the moment any data event occurs (my own terminology).
To understand blackberry technology, its important to first understand how the PDAs operated before the Blackberry came along. While most of the discussion centers around email, I like to refer to data events as anything that requires an update on your mobile. In the days before PDA became Internet enabled, you would basically do your work while mobile and then when you get back home or to the office, you connect a cable between the device and your PC and do a sync. During a sync, changes on your device get uploaded to your email or calendar accounts and any new emails or calendar changes at the accounts get loaded onto your PDA. Updates would take place once a day or whenever you have time to sync the device.
However, once PDA devices came integrated with Internet access via cellular data networks, you could sync certain data events with your various accounts without having to physically connect to the server. This is illustrated in the figure above. When you want to retrieve new emails on your POP3 or IMAP email account, you tell the PDA to go out and retrieve new emails. The path of data transfer starts with the PDA (the red arrow), and through the Internet-enabled mobile email software which connects with and talks to the email server over the Internet. After retrieving all new emails, the connection to the server is disconnected and new emails are displayed.
If you want to reply to one of the emails, you type your reply on the PDA and click send. The cycle starts all over again, with the PDA always initiating communication and requesting updates. Because of this, if you havent configured your mobile device to automatically retrieve emails, you could go hours without receiving an important email.
Push Technology Keeps You Instantly Updated All The Time
Now, lets take a look at how synchronization takes place with Blackberry Technology.
When youre using a Blackberry device, you can picture your handheld unit as a network device, like a PC on a LAN, thats always connected to your data account through the redirector software. Instead of residing on your mobile device, the software (whether its BES or desktop redirector software) is installed on the Blackberry Enterprise Server.
Communication between the software and the server, as well as the software and your Blackberry, is always a two-way street. Whenever theres a change in your email account, calendar or any other monitored account on either the Blackberry (if you create and send an email) or on the office network (your secretary updates your calendar with a new appointment), the BES immediately updates either the mobile device or the email or calendar account. In other words, Blackberry push technology keeps the device constantly and instantly in synch without any effort on your part.
What Is So Special About Blackberry Technology?
In all honesty, a PDA running Windows Mobile could be configured in much the same way as the BES service. There are new sync options being offered every day that can help you to keep your Internet-enabled Windows mobile device instantly up to date. For example, Aibek mentioned a few great sync tools such as ShifD, Mobical or OggSync that will do just that. Another cool method is Karls use of Mail2Web to sync up his device with email. Or, it could be as simple as using GoogleSync to stay synched up.
The fact is, Blackberry Technology was novel when it first came out, however the subsequent lawsuit with NTP, that claimed RIM used its technology already in use for PDAs, was only the first indication that while the technology is certainly effective and valuable it isnt rocket science. The device is now little more than a status symbol a way for someone to feel like theyre on the cutting-edge of cellular technology. But in a few years, everyone will be instantly connected to their email, calendar and social networks and it will be on to the next great thing.

I have a 14-year-old cousin and we are best of friends. But one thing bothers me a lot: she doesnt seem to be attracted to technology as I am. Every time I start a conversation about technology, she never for once pay attention. She seems to care more about clothes, make-ups and, like every other ladies, men! I even tried to use tech to make what she is interested in more fun for her, but she didnt hook up at all.So I decided not to based my assumption on my cousin alone, I had to mingle with other women or ladies to see if they are different. Mehn, they are even worse than my cousin. Start a conversation about tech, the next thing they do is turn their backs on you and examine their nails, hair-styles, perfume, entertainment, gossip and like my cousin men. They see technology as a mans game.You know, my cousin case really bothers me a lot because, as you all know, we are in a century where everything we do is centers around tech. You cant talk about a career without technology these days. So, why are they not interested in tech? and how do we get more women in technology?

1. Google Glass
Augmented Reality has already gotten into our life in the forms of simulated experiment and education app, but Google is taking it several steps higher with Google Glass. Theoretically, with Google Glass, you are able to view social media feeds, text, Google Maps, as well as navigate with GPS and take photos. 3. Oculus Rift
Virtual Reality gaming is here in the form of Oculus Rift. This history-defining 3D headset lets you mentally feel that you are actually inside a video game. In the Rifts virtual world, you could turn your head around with ultra-low latency to view the world in high resolution display.
There are premium products in the market that can do the same, but Rift wants you to enjoy the experience at only $300, and the package even comes as a development kit. This is the beginning of the revolution for next-generation gaming.

The timing is perfect as the world is currently bombarded with the virtual reality topic that could also be attributed to Sword Art Online, the anime series featuring the characters playing games in an entirely virtual world. While were getting there, it could take a few more years to reach that level of realism. Oculus Rift is our first step.
4. Leap Motion
Multi-touch desktop is a (miserably) failed product due to the fact that hands could get very tired with prolonged use, but Leap Motion wants to challenge this dark area again with a more advanced idea. It lets you control the desktop with fingers, but without touching the screen.

Its not your typical motion sensor, as Leap Motion allows you to scroll the web page, zoom in the map and photos, sign documentss and even play a first person shooter game with only hand and finger movements. The smooth reaction is the most crucial key point here. More importantly, you can own this future with just $70, a price of a premium PS3 game title!
If this device could completely work with Oculus Rift to simulate a real-time gaming experience, gaming is going to get a major make-over.
5. Eye Tribe
Eye tracking has been actively discussed by technology enthusiasts throughout these years, but its really challenging to implement. But Eye Tribe actually did this. They successfully created the technology to allow you to control your tablet, play flight simulator, and even slice fruits in Fruit Ninja only with your eye movements.

Its basically taking the common eye-tracking technology and combining it with a front-facing camera plus some serious computer-vision algorithm, and voila, fruit slicing done with the eyes! A live demo was done in LeWeb this year and we may actually be able to see it in in action in mobile devices in 2013.
Currently the company is still seeking partnership to bring this sci-fi tech into the consumer market but you and I know that this product is simply too awesome to fail.

The current problem that most devices have is that they function as a standalone being, and it require effort for tech competitors to actually partner with each other and build products that can truly connect with each other. SmartThings is here to make your every device, digital or non-digital, connect together and benefit you.

With SmartThings you can get your smoke alarms, humidity, pressure and vibration sensors to detect changes in your house and alert you through your smartphone! Imagine the possibilities with this.
You could track whos been inside your house, turn on the lights while youre entering a room, shut windows and doors when you leave the house, all with the help of something that only costs $500! Feel like a tech lord in your castle with this marvel.
7. Firefox OS
iOS and Android are great, but they each have their own rules and policies that certainly inhibit the creative efforts of developers. Mozilla has since decided to build a new mobile operating system from scratch, one that will focus on true openness, freedom and user choice. Its Firefox OS.
Firefox OS is built on Gonk, Gecko and Gaia software layers for the rest of us, it means it is built on open source, and it carries web technologies such as HTML5 and CSS3.

Developers can create and debut web apps without the blockade of requirements set by app stores, and users could even customize the OS based on their needs. Currently the OS has made its debut on Android-compatible phones, and the impression so far, is great.
You can use the OS to do essential tasks you do on iOS or Android: calling friends, browsing web, taking photos, playing games, they are all possible on Firefox OS, set to rock the smartphone market.

The project has been successfully funded so far, with an estimated delivery date of February 2013. For a mini supercomputer, the price seems really promising since its magically $99! Its not recommended for the non-programmer and non-Linux user, but the kit is loaded with development software to create your personal projects.
I never thought the future of computing could be kick-started with just $99, which is made possible using crowdfunding platforms.
